Today the reigning K-1 Champion Remy “The Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky had to secure his spot for the K-1 Final Championship 2009. The gatekeeper Melvin Manhoef has proven to be nothing but an easy task.
Melvin and Remy have met each other in the ring two times before. Both times it was Remy whose hands were held up high as the winner of the bouts. But both times Remy had to really set pace to be victorious so the task of today was known not to be easy.
It would also be Remy’s first fight after the surgery on his knee in April this year.
Remy had prepared very well for his fight against Melvin Manhoef and was feeling in good shape.
The first round showed both fighters very cautious and in the beginning of the round they circled around each other looking for an opening. Remy landed a yap and followed with a low kick. Melvin mostly relied on his boxing techniques. In the 2nd half of the first round both fighters stepped up the pace. Remy kicking and trying to knee when he came close to Melvin. Melvin was throwing some fierce solid hooks hoping to knock Remy out.
The 2nd round Melvin started with giving some low kicks, and waiting for the moment were he could throw some boxing combinations. Remy off course did not let this moment arise and fought of Melvin of with some solid kicks and knees.
The 3th round Remy started to execute combinations, starting with his hands and finishing with kicks. The first Highlight of the third round came when Remy seemed to knock Melvin down, but Melvin got up quickly and the referee did not count. The other highlight came when Melvin tried a spinning back kick to “The Flying Gentleman’s head.” The fight came to an end and the jury anonymous decided Remy had done enough to earn the points that led to the third victory over Melvin Manhoef.
The following day the 8th winning fighters had to decide who their opponent would be in the K-1 Grand prix final in December. The decision was made by way of a drawing.
