The K-1 Grand Prix 2007 report from Remy "The Flying Gentleman" Bonjasky.
Tokyo Japan December 8th 2007 Yokohama Arena.
After a stay of approximately one week in Japan, Saturday the 8th of December the day of the K-1 Grand Prix Final 2007 had finally come.
Many days of hard training, preparation and endurance have than passed, this in order to prepare fully for the pursuit
of the K-1 championship belt 2007.
The night before the tournament Remy fought his own mental fight, which resulted in problems falling
in to sleep. This lack of sleep showed to have some impact later that day. The fight against Badr “Bad Boy” Hari was hyped months before the fight, and the pressure on Remy winning the fight is enormous.
In the early afternoon after breakfast, Remy “The Flying Gentleman”, the team Bonjasky and the rest of the fighters fighting from
the blue corner headed to the Yokohama Arena. Along the way the bus is spotted by numerous of fans that show their happiness,
by pointing at and running aside the bus.
After a small hour the bus arrived at the Yokohama Arena. At the entrance Remy was stopped from entering the Dome,
he forgot to wear his K-1 name tag. The whole K-1 event is organized into the smallest details and followed by strict rules that
even Remy “The Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky had to show his name tag before he was allowed to enter the Arena. After Remy was escorted
to his dressing room, the normal and familiar routine started.
At first Remy’s hands, wrist and knuckles were being taped, and every year the K1-organisation changes the rules on how the tape is
allowed to fit the hands. Two K-1 officials had to see if Remy’s hands were taped correctly as the new rules subscribe.
Remy received a stamp on his taped hands, which indicates that the tape is officially checked. After this the waiting for the first
match started. During the waiting for the fight, it is very important to save all your energy, and Remy does this by lying down and
reading the book about the famous boxer George Foreman.
Then when its only 2 bouts away before Remy must fight, Remy started his warming up. Together with Ivan numerous of punching and
kicking combinations are executed. The K-1 officials called Remy to take position as his match is next.
The first round against Badr “Bad Boy” Hari many low kicks and punches are trade by Remy as well as Badr. The crowd passionately followed every move, and they
screamed and supported out loud when actions landed on target. At the end of the first round Badr had scored a few points more,
during the break Remy was told to take the initiative in the fight!
Remy listened carefully to his corner during the break, as he started to trade fierce low kicks, and boxing combinations in the
2nd round. The third round showed the same image, with Remy landing low kicks and breaking through the defense of Badr with a
fast boxing combination. Right before the end of the round Badr seemed to be exhausted and having trouble keeping his guard.
The bell for the end of the third round sounded and it was up for the judges to determine who had won this technical and hard bout.
The Bonjasky team thought the decision would either be a draw or a victory for Remy. Remy was called as the winner by a unanimous
decision.
The fight with Badr had been a tough match, and Remy had some pain in his shin from blocking Badr’s low kicks. The next match
was against Peter” The Lumber Jack” Aerts who won on KO in the first round from Junichi Sawayashiki.
The first round Aerts immediately tried to put pressure on Remy, Peter "the Lumberjack" Aerst who had a lot of energy left, as
Peter fought only one round against Junichi. Remy began by defending most of the attacks and countering the actions of Aerts.
The 2nd round Remy received a warning for what appeared that the referee is not too fund of Remy standing in a good guard.
After this warning Remy accelerated in full gear. Remy threw a few good boxing combinations which landed on Peter his head.
In the third round Remy and Peter gave it their all, both fighters knew that this last round could easily decide which fighter
would be the winner of the match. It was a pound for pound fight where every kick and punch technique made by one fighter was
returned by the other fighter. The exciting last round came to an end and then it was up to the judges to decide who the winner
of the bout was.
With a unanimous decision Peter “The Lumber Jack” Aerts was declared as the winner of this hard and technical bout.
The decision made by the judges is one where the team Bonjasky could live with. Remy had put up two good fights and knew that after
these two fights he was back on the right track, after all the up’s and downs from the previous year. Remy did not yet recover from
his two fights or a pleasant surprise waited outside his dressing room. It was nobody less than the Ac Milan soccer team who had come
to see Remy fight tonight.
The AC Milan soccer team congratulated Remy with his good performance.
The Italian Champions also happened to be in Tokyo,
they were preparing for the world cup match against the Urawa Reds.
Looking back at the tournament Remy can honestly say it has again been a great experience. Remy “the Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky did not
won the championship belt, but nevertheless put on a good performance. As a true sportsman Remy congratulated Sem Schilt with
his third K-1 title.
Remy “The Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky also declared that next year he will fully grow back and beyond his normal fighting
level and can’t wait to participate in the K-1 Grand Prix 2008.
With Sportive Regards from,
Remy “the Flying Gentleman” Bonjasky
